As a reliable catamaran tour provider, considerate employer, and responsible community contributor, we are committed to upholding the highest levels of honesty in our operations. This commitment extends to our environmental stewardship, which forms the foundation of our sustainability initiatives.

Our sustainability priorities

Karaya Punta Cana is a catamaran company that offers leisure activities in Punta Cana. We recognize our role in the broader travel and tourism industry. When determining our sustainability priorities, we considered the topics that are most important to our business and our stakeholders, including our customers, employees, and local communities.

When it comes to taking care of our planet, it’s up to all of us to do our part. At Karaya we are constantly seeking out ways to operate more efficiently and responsibly to care for our planet. We have implemented a number of important actions thus far, but know there is always more to do. We have already started measuring our electricity and fuel consumption, and identifying opportunities for reductions and efficiencies. We take total responsibility for our operations, and will reduce our consumption as much as possible, and offset what cannot be reduced. Karaya electricity works with solar panels located on top of the boat on the captain cabin.



Waste management
As a trusted travel partner to our customers, we are working to reduce waste with the following initiatives, being aware that we work directly on the ocean and need to take care of it:

No Plastic Policies: We have Adopt a strict "No Plastic" policy on board the boat. Avoid single-use plastic items such as straws, utensils, cups for the one that are still not changes we reciclate . We always suggest our customers to bring with them reusable alternatives made from eco-friendly materials for guests, such as reusable water bottles and bamboo utensils.

Waste Segregation and Recycling: We have established partnerships with local recycling facilities to responsibly dispose of recyclable materials. We Partner with local environmental organizations and initiatives focused on waste management and marine conservation. This collaboration provides additional resources and support for sustainable practices.

People
Our people are the heart of our business. They are directly responsible for delivering the bespoke experiences our customers have come to expect so we strongly believe in taking care of our employees and supporting them to achieve their own personal and career goals, all while creating a work environment that is fun, engaging and inclusive. We believe it is our strong company culture, and focus on inclusion and belonging, that help us attract and retain our travel experts, with an average employee experience level of 12 years. Our international team is made of people from more than 4 countries, with a common culture and diversity!

Sustainability focus:

Karaya is the Founder of “The Ecological Bávaro Reefs Foundation”. This foundation has a conservation program that has been working on restoring the reef to its natural habitat. This foundation was created by the impact generated by the boat tours company in the area, is by far the only boat company in the area working to restore the reef and protect the wildlife in the area.

The foundation priorities are:
Coral Nurseries Establishment: To propagate resilient coral species and genotypes, enhancing the capacity for reef restoration.
Coral Transplantation Techniques: To restore degraded coral reefs, replenishing key habitats and promoting biodiversity.
Research and Monitoring: Conduct extensive research and monitoring programs to better understand factors contributing to coral reef degradation and implement targeted conservation strategies.
Community Engagement: Engage local communities in coral reef restoration efforts through education and outreach programs, fostering stewardship and support for conservation initiatives.
Ecosystem Restoration: We prioritize activities that contribute directly to the restoration of natural coral reef ecosystems. This involves reef rehabilitation projects, removal of invasive species, and initiatives to enhance coral resilience.

Sustainable Outcomes

Increased Marine and Coastal Protection: By implementing targeted interventions such as habitat restoration and pollution reduction, we aim to enhance the protection and resilience of marine and coastal ecosystems in Bávaro Beach. Improved sustainable management Through collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders, we seek to improve the sustainable management of marine life in tourism destinations, promoting responsible practices and conservation efforts.
Increased Participation in Sustainable Tourism: Our project aims to increase the number of people participating in sustainable tourism experiences that support marine conservation, fostering a greater appreciation for marine ecosystems and their importance.
Measuring Success: We will measure the success of our outcomes through monitoring and evaluation processes, ensuring that our efforts lead to tangible and lasting benefits for Bávaro Beach's marine ecosystem.Successfully reintroduced fish biodiversity in artificial reefs near the Natural Pool of Bávaro, including critically endangered species and diverse reef fish populations.

We are proud members of the MPI Sustainability Council to contribute to the global efforts of incorporate sustainability practices on Corporate events and Sustainable MICE programs! The conservation of Bávaro Beach's marine ecosystem is vital for the well-being of both the environment and local communities. Our sustainability policies aim to address pressing environmental challenges through a comprehensive approach focused on conservation, education, and sustainable practices. Together, we can make a significant impact in safeguarding marine biodiversity, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and ensuring the long-term health of this invaluable natural resource.
